Doing what is needed without being asked or reminded

Teaching Tips:

• Explain to your child that the choices they make impact others including their family, their friends, classmates and teachers
• Share with your child that God has a plan for all of us. This is called our vocation. What God calls us to do
• As a child, their vocation, what God is calling them to do, is to say yes and do what is needed without being asked or reminded, this how they can be responsible
• Take time to evaluate if you are doing things that your child should being doing for themselves
• Create a chart of chores for your child, or use this one, chores can include:

√Make your bed each morning √Keeping your room clean

√Help take out the garbage √Completing your homework

√Help wash the dishes √Putting dirty clothes in the hamper

√Turn off the lights when not in use √ Take good notes in class

• Every time they complete a chore, they can mark it by drawing a STAR
• Identify your child’s strengths and weaknesses in chores and assist them if needed
• Explain to your child that keeping order is important because when we keep order we are being responsible
• Talk to your child about the importance of following through. Sometimes if we forget or we make a mistake, it’s important to admit that mistake and that is also taking responsibility
• Acknowledge your child’s mistakes, discipline if necessary and try to be consistent. Sometimes disciplining is harder on us then it is on them so be sure you can carry out whatever you say you will
• Do not make excuses for their mistakes
• Remind your child to pray:

Jesus, help me to do what is needed without being asked or reminded
