Saint George – A Brave Friend of Jesus

(Feast Day: April 23) adapted for grades K-2

A long time ago, there lived a brave man named George. He loved Jesus with all his heart.

George was a soldier. George was strong, he was very brave and fought in battles. People respected him because he was kind, fair, and very courageous.

There’s a famous legend about George. People say there was a scary dragon that lived near a village. The dragon hurt the people and kept them from getting water.

The villagers were very afraid. One day, even the princess was in danger!

George came riding on his horse. He made the sign of the cross, trusted in Jesus, and fought the dragon! George was very brave! With God’s help, George defeated the dragon!

One day, the king told George to do something very wrong: to hurt Christians who loved Jesus. George said no to the king.As a follower of Jesus, he knew this was wrong. He would never hurt people for loving Jesus.

Because of this, the king put George in prison. He was treated very badly. They were very mean to him.But George never gave up or became sad. George prayed, and one day he heard Jesus say to him: “Do not be afraid, George. I am with you.”

Even when the king promised him riches and safety if he stopped believing in Jesus, George said “I will always follow Jesus. His Kingdom lasts forever!”

At last, George gave his life for Jesus. He became a martyr.A martyr is someone who loves Jesus and they choose to follow Him, even when it is very hard or dangerous. They would rather stay close to Jesus than do something wrong, even if it means they might get hurt or die. Martyrs are brave heroes for God.When people saw George’s love and courage, many became Christians too.
